Governor releases Javaid Rahi’s book on JK tribal and their languages

SRINAGAR, MAY 28 – The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, has called for undertaking intensive research on the various tribal communities, their languages and cultures to disseminate and document the rich history, composite cultural heritage and other glorious facets of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Governor made these observations while releasing a book “Jammu Kashmir Ke Qabail Aur Unki Zubanein”, at a function held at Raj Bhavan, here today. The book written by young writer and Gujjar activist Dr. Javaid Rahi has been published by the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation,- a frontal organization of Gujjars.

The Governor described the book as an excellent piece of work on the varied aspects of the different tribal communities, their languages and cultures. He suggested that the scholars at the Universities in Jammu and Kashmir could take up well-planned research projects on identified aspects to enlarge on the benchmark work done by Dr. Rahi. Such planned researches could lead to the award of M. Phil and Ph. D degrees.

While laying emphasis on the need for paying greater attention towards the promotion of Urdu and other languages of the State, he mentioned that a very great deal of work can be done in the fields of folk art, literature, culture, history and oral traditions of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Governor congratulated Dr. Javaid Rahi for putting in hard work to bring out an excellent well-researched book.

The Vice Chairman, Gujjar and Bakerwal Advisory Board, Ch. Bashir Ahmad Naz, speaking on the occasion, congratulated Dr. Rahi on the release of his book. He said that everything possible would be done for the promotion of Gojri and other languages in the State.

The Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Mr. Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, thanked the Governor for taking keen interest in the promotion and development of various languages and the composite cultural heritage of the State.

The Editor-cum-Cultural Officer, Pahari Wing of the Cultural Academy, Dr. Farooq Anwaar Mirza presented a detailed review of the book, comprising five chapters and running into 400 pages.

The Editor, English wing, Mr. Abid Ahmad readout the profile of Dr. Javaid Rahi. He said that Dr. Rahi has written 9 books so far in Urdu and Gojri languages and edited a number of volumes.

Dr. Javaid Rahi, in his Vote of Thanks, expressed his gratitude to the Governor for releasing the book.

The Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Raj Kumar Goyal was present on the occasion.

A number of writers, academicians and intellectuals were present at the book release function, among whom were Dr. Aziz Hajini, General Secretary, Adbee Markaz Kamraz, Dr. Shujaat Bukhari, senior journalist,  and Mr. Ghulam Sarwar Chouhan.
